Crazy Hair

How the image came to be What an excitement tonight when I see the image I submitted for +Chrysta Rae's Photography Scavenger Hunt placed by every single judge! Thank you so much +Chris Chabot, +dene' miles, +Alan Shapiro, +Derek Kind +Jacob Lucas and +Barry Blanchard. Unlike my profile pic might suggest, this image did not start with the idea of water. It actually started with a patch of grass. A few weeks prior to the theme announcement, and as a highly scientific experiment to see how tall grass could grow, my daughter decided to build a small fence around a patch of grass to protect it from the sharp knifes of the lawnmower. When Chrysta announced the theme of "Crazy Hair", and before I had any concept in mind, I knew one thing: I needed a wig! I had no idea what I'd do with it, but I knew I needed a wig. The same night it was ordered on eBay. So when the wig came in the mail, I still had no idea, I took some other images and selfies, wich you may have seen in my stream. but I still had no clue on how to make that hair go crazy! Walking around the house, I came across our watering can, not too far from that patch of grass. And one plus one made two! Around that same time I started experimenting with water balloons and after my original experimentation which resulted in my current profile pic, +Christopher Germano mentioned another great artist: +Tim Tadder who had a fabulous project of water wigs. It is his videos that inspired me for the hat effect of the balloon. And that is when it clicked and one plus one made three! I had my concept! I will create a separate post with a behind the scenes. Or, as I do not have that many shots, this might turn more into a collection of bloppers. So you have read all your way to here? *What do you do when you receive flowers for father's day?* Put them in water, of course! If you wonder how this was taken, do a hand stand in front of your computer (or turn your monitor upside-down if you think this to be easier). I had two ladders run across the pool. I was leaning on the first, body in the water and my feet were locked under the second to avoid diving in. I waited late afternoon, for the pool to be in the shade. I did not want any light through the surface of the pool. I had a single speedlight locked in an airtight empty plastic container from Costco that once held nuts. It was on the floor of the pool with a white umbrella somewhat attached. The speedlight was triggered from the weak flash on my NEX-5 in a waterproof bag. I figured that using a tripod underwater added too much complexity... So I had my 7 year old aim the camera and press the shutter while I held my breath for three successive images. He had a blast, seeing his dad get all dressed into the pool!

I have been wanting to combine my water portrait images with dance photography for a while now. And Erin was more than willing to get wet and take a few water balloons for a spin until we had the perfect tutu.

Liquid Jumping

It is since November last year that I wanted to experiment with liquid portraiture. For this series I was inspired by the work of the London photographer Jaroslav Wieczorkiewicz (AurumLight). However, winter makes it difficult with the lack of a studio and with, as the only large enough place to shoot, our backyard! Fast forward and it is July. The evenings are warmer and make that kind of shot possible outside. My model was courageous enough to withstand the 50 or so splashes of milk it took to have enough images to assemble this milk skirt and the rope.
